For the sixth year in a row, Subaru is the only manufacturer to earn Top Safety Picks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for every vehicle in its line up. The Impreza, XV Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback, and Forester each earned Top Safety Pick + and are once again the only vehicles in their classes to earn a Superior rating on Crash Mitigation and Prevention.

So, what does that mean?

IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: crashworthiness - how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash - and crash avoidance and mitigation - technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.

To determine crashworthiness, IIHS rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal or poor, based on performance in five tests: moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. In the area of crash avoidance and mitigation, IIHS assigns vehicles with available front crash prevention systems ratings of basic, advanced or superior, based on the type of system and performance in track tests

To qualify for 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test.

To qualify for 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must meet the TOP SAFETY PICKcriteria, plus earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

IIHS President Adrian Lund says, "For 2015, the Institute is raising the bar. In order to earn our highest rating, the Top Safety Pick Plus, a vehicle has to have available an automatic braking system that is effective in our 12 and 25 mile-per-hour track test. Typically, these systems first alert drivers if they detect an impending collision, and if the driver doesn't respond, then the brakes are applied automatically. These features act as a second set of eyes for the driver and in preventing collisions."
