Question 1: What do I need to do to get my scooter ready for Spring?
Neil Says: If you are going to get your scooter ready for Spring yourself, use the following checklist to ensure your safety on the road:
- Check your tires for tread wear and cracking.
- Check your front and rear tire pressure. Front 28-32 psi, rear 30-34 psi.
- Check your front and rear tire bearings for wear or looseness.
- Check your front and rear wheels for free spin.
- Check your brakes.
- Go over your scooter and look for missing screws and bolts.
- Check your front and rear brake pads for wear.
- Check all your lights, running, turn, headlights, and brake/stop lights for proper operation.
- Check your horn.
- Charge the battery. On scooter batteries you should not use a car battery charger unless it has a 2 amp or lower setting. Otherwise you will cook the battery and it will need to be replaced.
- Check to see if your fuse holder has a spare fuse. If not, purchase a spare 15 amp fuse and put it with the scooter.
- Check your spare tool kit to make sure you have the basic tools and that they are in good condition.
- Check your cables for proper operation. See that your throttle operates freely and returns to the idle position on its own. Oil if necessary.
- Check your brake cables for the same operation. Oil if necessary.
- Check your gas filter and if it looks dirty or clogged replace it.
- Check your air filter. If dirty, clean or replace it.
- On Water Cooled Scooters, the antifreeze should be changed every 1 to 3 years depending on the quality of the antifreeze used to replace the original.
Before taking your scooter on any highways or major road trips, please do a short safety check in your local neighborhood to make sure the scooter is running properly. Test the brakes, lights, turn signals, and be sure the gears shift smoothly and everything is functioning properly.
