At Stanley Subaru, we care about the comfort of our guests. We want everyone to have a pleasant experience when visiting our dealership, and it is in the interest of our guests that we are considering a cell phone use policy in our public areas. Out of respect to other guests at Stanley Subaru, we would like to ask that anyone who needs to make a phone call or who receives an incoming one to please go to a private area or step outside to take the call. People are often unaware of how easily private conversations can be heard by others, and we hold our guests privacy in the highest regard.
When did it become commonplace for people to talk (or in some instances shout) about Aunt Susie's bunions, or about how Nick could possibly dump Alyssa to go out with Becky? When did it become polite to discuss private matters in a public setting? Why is there a constant necessity to be using a cell phone at all times? Why is flipping through a magazine, knitting, or (gasp) reading a book in a waiting room obsolete? Joanna Krotz from Microsoft Business addressed this on her blog post:
"About 72% of Americans agree that users' worst cell phone habit is having loud conversations in public, according to a recent national poll by market research group Synovate. Almost seven out of 10 (68%) said they observe poor cell phone etiquette at least once every day. She further went on to quote from Steve Levine at Synovate that he "suspects the functionality and ease-of-use of these devices lead us to become lazy and to lose awareness of ourselves, others and our surroundings.
"Technology and manners are compatible. For example, most Web users are up-to-speed on e-mail etiquette, even Gen Y teens, the poster kids for iPod culture. Wireless users must evolve. Sure, there are a handful of folks who must take calls no matter where, no matter what - say, heads of state or expectant fathers. But virtually everyone can turn on the vibrate option, depend on voice-mail messages or head for a secluded area before pressing "send." "
