The heart of the 2012 Impreza is an all-new 2.0-liter, horizontally opposed flat four-cylinder BOXER engine; a signature design of all vehicles wearing the Subaru badge. This more efficient engine features a Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS) for optimum power, fuel efficiency and low emissions, balancing 148 hp and 145 lb/ft of torque with 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway in the five-speed manual or 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway in the Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).

The Lineartronic CVT is an enhanced, second-generation unit that, unlike a traditional automatic transmission, delivers an infinite and seamless variability in available drive ratios without any noticeable shifting. It helps provide maximum engine performance and fuel efficiency, and with optional six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddleshifters on Premium, Sport and Limited models, the Lineartronic CVT also maintains a level of sportiness.

 

A new electric power steering system improves fuel efficiency by an additional two percent, and lower rolling resistance tires reduce fuel economy, robbing road friction. And to help improve driver fuel efficiency, a new ECO gauge helps indicate the most fuel-efficient driving behavior.

 

Thanks to new chassis components like liquid hydraulic engine mounts for enhanced vibration damping, pillow ball bushings and strengthened, double-wishbone suspension, the 2012 Impreza has ride qualities, stability and handling responsiveness that outperform all class competitors.

 

Subaru engineers made numerous safety improvements for 2012. Front seat occupants will notice the windshield is placed further in front for a sense of even more interior space, and thin A- and B-pillars all around help increase visibility out all windows.

 

Subaru engineers also incorporated more high-tensile steel into the Subaru-exclusive Ring Shaped Frame Reinforcement body structure, making the already safe Impreza even safer in the new, more stringent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests. And all-new driver's knee airbag and headrests for all three rear seats protect occupants even better.

 

All Impreza models get standard safety equipment like Vehicle Dynamics Control, four-wheel disc Antilock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Override system, which prioritizes the brake pedal in an event where both the brake and gas pedals are pressed simultaneously.

 

Premium models receive an all-new six-speaker stereo system as standard equipment, which features high-tech innovations like Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS) iPod integration and inputs for both USB and 3.5mm auxiliary.
