The Stanley Subaru Scoop

What is MPGe?

MPGe is short for miles per gallon equivalent. What MPGe does is put the efficiency of running on the electric motor in a number which most drivers already understand and are familiar with: MPG.

Like MPG, the higher the number, the more efficient the vehicle, and the more money you save on fuel costs.

How is MPGe calculated?

MPGe is calculated by figuring out how much heat the power source can produce.

This is done in BTUs. One BTU is the amount of heat it takes to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit.

The US Energy Information Administration calculates one gallon of gasoline produces 120,333 BTUs.

To generate the same amount of heat with electricity takes about 33 ½ kilowatt-hours.

So what does that mean?

The long and the short of all this is that the Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid puts out enough power and energy to be as efficient as if it got 95 miles per gallon on gas.

Pretty nice.
